Elections 2006 - Yep, Just Around the Corner
The people we elect to public office play a critical role in protecting our air, water and lands. That's why over the coming months the North Star Chapter will be very active in reaching out to Minnesotans about the importance of the 2006 elections. Get the facts, learn about what we're doing, and find out how to help by visiting our Elections 2006 page. Be part of the hope by signing up today to volunteer http://northstar.sierraclub.org/2006elections/volunteer
Adopt A Wetland Service Series
Join the Sierra Club Wetlands Committee as we begin a service project with support from the Fish and Wildlife Service. On July 22, August 26, September 23 and October 28th (10:00am to 1:00pm) we will be working in the Bass Ponds section of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge to improve two wetland areas adjacent to the Minnesota River. The project will involve removing non-native species like purple loosestrife and buckthorn, monitoring waterfowl and water quality and trash pick-up. For details go to: http://northstar.sierraclub.org/activities/outings/2006/2006adoptAWetland.html
We Don't Need Another Polluting Coal Plant
Stop new dirty coal-fired power coming into Minnesota and help lay a deeper foundation for powering Minnesota with renewable energy like wind generation. In October, attend a public hearing and tell the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission that Minnesota does not want new coal fired power from the proposed new Big Stone II coal plant - we want clean energy. If you can attend a public hearing this October or help organize to pack the house, please contact Cesia (saysha) at 612-659-9124 or email . Dates and locations of public hearings include Oct. 9 - Benson, Oct.10th - Morris, Oct. 11th - Ortonville, Oct. 12th - Canby, Oct. 13th - Granite Falls, Oct. 16th - Saint Paul. For more information on the Big Stone II coal plant expansion, visit http://northstar.sierraclub.org/campaigns/air/coal/bigStoneProposal.html
