by Taylor Mork and Eric WeimanUnity Summer Internship Program, Summer 2007
In addition to the films available through the Sierra Club film festival volunteers Eric and Taylor have assembled the following list of movies about the environment:
- Who
Killed the Electric Car?
This movie is about what happened to the electric car and how it disappeared from the automotive market. - An Inconvenient Truth
Though at first glance at the title you might find this movie to be an apocalyptic documentary on our planet, it turns to be a caring and inspirational view of Al Gore's fight to stop global warming where it stands by revealing truths and lies around the issue. - The 11th Hour
This movie is another spin at the global warming crisis as seen by actor and producer Leonardo Dicaprio, with over 70 interviews with scientists, historians, designers, and thinkers who share their ideas and opinions about what has happened and what we can do to help. A big budget, big action, and theatrical look at the effects of global warming and its impending problems. - The Corporation
A compelling documentary on the results and disturbing implications that have come from treating impersonal, amoral organizations — corporations — as legal "persons." The film is based on the book The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power by Joel Bakan. - Erin Brockovich
This movie is a look into the life of Erin Brockovich and her fight against the energy giant Pacific Gas and Electric Company known as PG&E for contaminating groundwater with hexavalent chromium. - Baraka
Director Ron Fricke creates a new look at the human race by using time-lapse photography in order to show the flowing essence of humanity as it flocks in daily activities. - The China Syndrome
The fictional story of a TV news reporter who discovers safety problems and a coverup at a nuclear power plant. - FernGully: The Last Rainforest (for kids)
A good movie about the environment for kids. - Happy Feet
Director George Miller manages to spin together a movie about penguins, dancing, and pollution suitable for kids. While children may not quite understand the subtext behind the final scenes, adults will be well educated about global warming and the effects it is having on the arctic. - Winged Migration
A documentary on the incredible flights made by birds during migration, featuring amazing footage of birds in flight.
