Mercury Reduction Efforts in Minnesota
April 14, 2007 - Global Warming Day of Action!
In 2006, the Minnesota Legislature passed, and Governor Tim Pawlenty signed, what was the most stringent mercury reduction legislation in the country - reducing mercury emissions from the state's three largest polluting power plants by 90% in the next few years. Overall, it will cut mercury pollution from all coal-fired power plants in the state by more than 75%, or nearly 1,200 pounds per year. The effort was the culmination of many years of work by a broad network of organizations, including the Sierra Club. Shortly after the Minnesota passed this law, several other Midwestern states followed suit.
