What's the Green School Audit?

How much electricity does your school use annually? Does your local school offer students an organic salad bar? Do they recycle? What incentives exist for biking and walking? The Green School Audit provides students with the tools and questions necessary to work with school officials to examine their school's environmental policies. The audit designed by the North Star Student Group compares the impacts and policies of schools throughout the state on the environment, and highlights best practices that students and school officials can use as a model to develop better policies at their school.

Bloomington Jefferson High School, Hopkins High School, St. Paul Central, Patrick Henry High School, Minnetonka High School, Apple Valley School of Environmental Studies, Southwest Minneapolis, and Seward Montessori Elementary students are leading the effort at their schools, and encouraging other students to audit their school. The audit consists of 11 sections with 4-9 questions each. Students interview school officials, compile the information, and then compare their results with other schools. The goal of the Green School audit is to determine best practices, encourage students to think about the impacts they and their schools make on the environment, and result in changes that protect the environment and children's health.
