Volunteer with Forest Watch
Forest Watch volunteers do a variety of projects:
Visiting national forest areas that are proposed for logging, to identify possible impacts on wildlife or other consequences of logging, or visiting recently logged areas to make sure boundaries, mitigations for protecting wildlife, and best mgmt practices were followed. Forest Watch veterans train new volunteers in what to look for and how to report it (this is called ground-truthing).
Analyzing environmental assessments and other research, to identify parts of logging projects that will help or hurt wildlife habitat; and study whether the project is following the forest-wide restoration plans.
Writing comments on proposed logging projects. Comments can be technical and science-based or simple and values-based. Sierra Club will have sample comments and talking points about specific logging projects.
Getting the word out so that more people participate in these public lands decisions. Work with a group of friends, make a presentation, or staff a Sierra Club table at an environmental fair. We need more people to write the US Forest Service and their congressional representatives about why they value our national forests.
Which of these would you like to help with? to get involved!
