Volunteers Needed to Monitor the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
Volunteers are needed to cross-country ski into portages and lakes to check for snowmobile tracks in the wilderness. Makes a nice day trip in beautiful country. Snowmobiles are not allowed in the Vento Unit of the Wilderness (Mid-Gunflint Trail Area) yet air photos by Kevin Proesholdt of the Izaak Walton League and Clyde Hanson of the Sierra Club in 2006 showed snowmobile use where it is illegal. This winter the Forest Service, Sierra Club and the Cook County Snowmobile Club are all helping to monitor 20+ sites this winter. Call Clyde Hanson of Lutsen at (218) 387-9081 to volunteer.
