Environmental Justice

The crossroads of Social Justice and the Environmental Movement

The North Star Chapter's new Environmental Justice Support Committee is part of the ever-growing EJ movement. But what is Environmental Justice? It is a shift, perhaps a radical one, in the common understanding of what are environmental issues. EJ looks at destruction and devastation at every level, asking who bears the greatest burden. Time and again, the answer is communities of color and communities in poverty. EJ merges social justice and environmental sensibility. It is, at its best, driven at the grassroots level.

Our goal is to build relationships and knowledge. The relationships happen in lots of ways. As the Sierra Club stands in solidarity with the communities most affected by environmental destruction, we build relationships. Whenever we gather, socializing is part of it. As EJ members work with other committees, relationships throughout the chapter strengthen.

Building knowledge also has several branches. The committee hosts regular events for education on EJ issues. Its members also visit other committees to serve as resources on Environmental Justice. Finally, the support committee acts as a liason to the Sierra Club's EJ partner, the Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota.
