The 2005 Tour de Sprawl
On Saturday, September 17, 2005, over 230 riders participated in the 10th Annual Tour de Sprawl. This was our largest Tour to date! A sunny morning gave way to a partly cloudy afternoon as the temperature climbed up into the 70s. The tour route returned to its roots in St. Paul, Minnesota this year. Rest stops highlighted:
- Large development proposals on St. Paul's West Side
- A new Mendota Heights town center
- The Dodge Nature Center
- The Robert Street transit study corridor
- Dakota County's excellent, growing trail system (pdf)
This wonderful 19-mile ride was on quiet, scenic bicycle paths and some rolling hills through St. Paul's West Side, Mendota Heights, West St. Paul and South St. Paul (see map below). The ride lasted about five hours and featured rest stops where bikers heard from local citizen activists, elected officials, and an innovative developer (pdf, 76k).
