John DeWitt discusses history of Hiawatha
Line at Lake Street station
Hiawatha Light Rail Ride
October 2, 2005We had a terrific event, a ride on the Hiawatha Light Rail Line, on Sunday, October 2nd. Almost 50 people signed in for our train ride from Ft. Snelling to the Warehouse District of downtown Minneapolis, and that doesn't include a sizable number of children who attended. Everyone appeared to have a great time and we have been told it was well-organized.
We started the event with me (Celeste) stating our goal of supporting Light Rail in N. Dakota County and explaining the logistics of the trip, which included brief stops at the Lake Steet Station and Warehouse district. Before we boarded, I introduced Cy Svobodny, Mat Hollinshead, the Sierra Club's Transportation Chair, and John DeWitt, co-founder of Transit for Livable Communities. Cy gave a terrific presentation on trains and light rail. We handed out stickers and buttons. Margaret put together a very handy booklet explaining our trip, telling people ways to get involved, and introducing our guests, Mat and John.
At the stops Mat discussed the history of the stations and neighborhood involvement their development. When we got back Ron and I hurriedly met the demand for rootbeer floats.
All in all it was a very successful event.
