Sierra Neighborhoods - Seward Neighborhood Kickoff!

Sierra Neighborhoods had its first house party in Seward Neighborhood! In a time when environmental problems can seem enormous and insurmountable, Seward residents are taking action to change their personal impact on Minnesota's water. The house party brought in 18 people who arrived conveniently just after a large downpour. The storm passed with perfect timing, allowing for an outdoor demonstration and discussion on the concept of stormwater runoff beside the host's gutter. Participants were eager to view two kinds of rain barrels outside and listen to a couple of experts, one on native plants and one on good infiltration and pervious pavement. They provided photo: Seward Neighborhood Kickoff, May 5, 2005 insight into better choices on plant and paving selection. Folks moved inside for some snacks and a welcoming introduction to the Sierra Neighborhoods program by one of the co-chairs. Participants introduced themselves, creating an immediate connection among people with varying levels of knowledge about water quality. The other co-chair illuminated the problem of stormwater runoff and the solutions in our own homes and yards for improving water quality with an interactive presentation. The heart of the BEC program came through when he asked the question, "Why are you here tonight?" which resulted in a great discussion of values such as, "I want my children to be able to swim in Lake Nokomis," "I canoe, and I love clean rivers - I live by the Mississippi, and I want to keep it clean." "I don't have time for a lot, but these changes are something I can do." The volunteer leaders took this opportunity to point out the goal of Sierra Neighborhoods being not only about cleaning up the lakes and rivers, but sustaining a community of people who care for the environment together. Energized by their new level of knowledge and solid tools for personal action, participants stayed well after the program to talk, share ideas, and make plans to keep in touch and connect on other resources.

Our Lakes, the Mississippi, and You - Sierra Neighborhoods Water Quality Program

The major source of pollution in the water we drink, swim, and fish in is no longer large industry. It is us. Fortunately, there are simple ways we can dramatically improve water quality by implementing better practices in our homes and yards. Practices like using native plants, keeping clippings out of gutters, and using non-toxic cleaners, are better for our communities and the lakes and rivers we enjoy.

Sierra Neighborhoods is a new program that works with residents and neighborhood groups to provide resources and training on these better practices, while building a stronger community that supports each other in making these changes.
