Inner City Outings

Our Mission

The mission of the Inner City Outings program is to promote and develop greater understanding of other cultures, foster respect of self and others, and provide leadership skills, and to protect and appreciate all wilderness through outdoor exploration, education, spiritual growth, and sharing.

An Introduction to Minnesota ICO

At Inner City Outings (ICO), volunteer leaders guide wilderness trips for people who otherwise would not have the opportunity to enjoy them. To reach that goal, Minnesota Inner City Outings (MN ICO) of the North Star Chapter of the Sierra Club, provides predominantly low-income youth with an introduction to outdoor adventures including dayhikes, backpacking, canoeing, camping, and skiing. In conjunction with community agencies, MN ICO leads small groups of children on, what is for many, their first wilderness experience. MN ICO provides the leaders with training in outdoor recreation and safety as well as all the equipment needed for the trip, while the agencies are ready with the excited children eager for fun. MN ICO serves agencies based in the Twin Cities, but has volunteers from all over Minnesota.
