The Shoreview Green Community is an effort, led by local Sierra Club members, to make Shoreview a model community for its environmental practices. The group works on three areas of concern: Clean Water, Energy, and Transportation.

Green Community Awards Program — Call for Applications due June 12th
Applications are now available for the third annual Shoreview Green Community Awards, a program, originally created by Sierra Club members, that rewards residential property owners for their use of rain gardens, shoreline buffers, habitat gardens with native plants, and other practices that improve water quality in our lakes, streams and wetlands. The application deadline is June 12. A free, self-guided tour of award-winning properties will be held from 12:30 to 5 p.m. August 1 and 2. Winners for 2009 can decide whether or not to include their properties on the tour.
Properties must be located in Shoreview or within the Grass Lake Watershed in Roseville. To find a map of the watershed, go to www.glwmo.org.
Applications, which include information about the tour, are available from the Shoreview City Hall and Community Center, the Roseville City Hall and online here.
Judges will give priority to properties that use a combination of good management practices, including infiltration of storm water (e.g., rain gardens) and restoration or protection of natural shoreline. Properties that use native Minnesota plants and limit use of fertilizers and pesticides will rank high. Winners will receive a permanent award sign and a framed photo of their property, plus recognition by the Shoreview mayor, City Council and Environmental Quality Committee (EQC).
This program is sponsored by Shoreview's EQC, with volunteer participation from the Shoreview Sierra Club Green Community and assistance from the Grass Lake Water Management Organization, the Rice Creek Watershed District and the Sierra Club North Star Chapter.
